Clarifications

Hope all of you had a great first day at NMC, 2017. There are a few clarifications to be made based on the feedback we have received:

1. Participants can use their cell phones to keep time for all the three competitions. However, participants cannot use cell phones for research purposes after the release of the Confidential Information.
2. Participants can wear Indian formals.
3. Specifically for the mediators: The opening statement (OS) cannot take more than 3 minutes in the competition. The judges will be asked to not mark you down for giving a shorter OS. Time management is an important component of the tournament. Under no circumstances should the mediators take 10-15 minutes for the OS.
4. The mediators are strongly recommended to ensure that both the teams should receive similar time for the caucus. One team cannot be given 10 minutes and the other only 2. The teams facing disproportionate sharing of caucus time should bring the same to the notice of the judges in the self reflection time.
5. For the negotiating and mediation teams – please note that there will be multiple issues in a problem and you should try to identify the most important issue of your client and tactically concede on the other issues. Your justification for protecting a certain issue should come out in the pre nego (for negotiation teams) and post round self analysis. (for both mediation and negotiation teams)

The problems will be of increasing difficult in every subsequent round – try to come up with innovative solutions to your problems and try to avoid repeating the common facts during the mediation and negotiation process to save time.
